Announcement on Sale of Hatfield Main Campus
Biblical Theological Seminary (BTS), Hatfield, PA has entered into an agreement to sell its Main Campus at 200 N. Main Street, Hatfield to PIRHL, a developer, contractor, and owner headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio with local offices in Burlington, NJ. While there are significant contingencies to be resolved related to zoning, permitting and financing, the agreement anticipates the closing on the sale will occur in December 2017.
The BTS’ long range strategic plan, developed in 2015, projected a move toward the heart of the Philadelphia metropolitan area, providing a more distributed education model to serve the needs of its diverse student body. This also will provide a new opportunity for growth and influence in the northeast corridor. Consistent with this strategic direction, BTS will offer its programs at sites closer in proximity to where most current and future students are living and working.
The agreement calls for the Hatfield property to become a senior housing complex, meeting a significant need in the North Penn area for safe, comfortable, and affordable housing for senior citizens. The seminary also expects to have an ongoing presence at the site, possibly offering classes and a counseling program at the new facility.
BTS President Dr. Frank A James said, “We have taken seriously our mission to ‘follow Jesus into the world.’ This move is a demonstration of our commitment to teach and act in a manner consistent with that missional vision. We will always be grateful to Hatfield as the place of our institutional birth and expect to continue having a significant presence in this community through our people and programs. We are also delighted to be able to leave behind a new facility that will be an asset to the area and meet a pressing community need. We look forward to being of greater service to the Christian Church in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area.”
A committee of the board of trustees and officers of BTS is currently working to identify and lease new facilities and relocate BTS’ educational and administrative activities by the end of December 2017.
